The castle tends to be calmest in the first couple of hours after opening, before school groups and day-trippers build up through the late morning and into the afternoon. An early arrival gives the keep's narrow stairs more breathing room and the chapel more room to stand still in.
Season by season
Spring and early autumn bring mild weather without the heaviest summer crowds. Summer is warmest but busiest, especially around the middle of the day, and in extreme heat the château can close early; winter is quietest of all. The château keeps longer hours from late May to late September and shorter ones the rest of the year, so check its own website for current times before you travel.
For the stained glass specifically
If the Sainte-Chapelle's windows are the main draw, aim for a bright day. The chapel closes for a short break around midday, so a late-morning or mid-afternoon visit gives you the most light while it is open.
Days to prefer
A weekday outside French school holidays is consistently the quietest combination. The château opens daily, closing only on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, so there's no weekly closed day to plan around.
